Democrats Are Rebelling Against Consequences
Gavin Newsom Believes He Really Is Above The Law
Gavin Newsom does not realize it, but he has all but spoken the quiet part about the Democrat-led insurrection in Los Angeles out loud—the Democrats do not give one tinker’s damn about the law, but they do believe they should be immune from the law’s consequence.
Update
In addition to accidentally letting the mask slip and revealing Democrats for the power-hungry nihilists that they are, Gavin Newsom is proving the perpetual unwisdom of trying to match wits with America’s master troll (and 47th President) Donald Trump.
The media has, of course, been quick to seize on Newsom’s “come get me” attempt at tough-guy rhetoric.
But the media is also of necessity reiterating Donald Trump’s basic talking point—that these are riots and they will be stopped, one way or another, as White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt made clear.
The president’s order, directing 2,000 National Guardsmen to protect federal buildings in the city, allows for a 60-day deployment. Leavitt would not say how long the operation might last, but suggested it would continue until violence at the protests ends.
“I don’t want to get ahead of the president on any decisions or timelines,” she said. “I can tell you the White House is 100% focused on this. The president wants to solve the problem. And that means creating an environment where citizens, if they wish, are given the space and the right to peacefully protest.”
“And these violent disruptors and insurrectionists, as the president has called them, are not only doing a disservice to law-abiding citizens, but to those who wish to peacefully protest. That’s a fundamental right this administration will always support and protect.”
At the same time, Newsom himself is repeating the same steps Trump has taken, but with state resources, directing approximately 800 regional law enforcement officers to support the LAPD in quelling the riots (which are really an insurrection).
On X, Newsom is trying to spin it as “cleaning up Trump’s mess.”
Yet all of this merely confirms what many independent journalists—myself included—have been saying, and what Tom Homan and the Trump Administration has been saying: this is violence, not speech. This is a riot (arguably an insurrection), not a peaceful protest.
Gavin Newsom is helping take away the “peaceful protest” narrative from the Democrats usual supporters within corporate media.
Governor Newsom, I have no doubt President Trump appreciates your support, and also the irony that it is wholly unintentional.
Starting Point
By daring President Trump and “border czar” Tom Homan to make good on their implied threats and actually arrest him, Gavin Newsom made plain that respect for the law, and thoughts of actual justice, play no role in Democrat thinking. They are all about ego, and all about power.
Gavin’s first faux pas came when he deliberately misconstrued Tom Homan’s statement on federal agents arresting either Newsom or Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass if they should cross a line and start interfering with ICE agents in the performance of their duty. Newsom responded to Homan’s warning by daring Homan to arrest him.
We should pause here to note what Tom Homan actually said about arresting politicians while being interviewed by MSNBC’s Jacob Soboroff.
Jacob Soboroff: You've also mentioned Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom, and there have been threats, you know, previously that if you stand in the way of your enforcement operations, you know, you could be subject potentially to arrest. Are you saying that about Mayor Bass and Governor Newsom? Are they at risk of being arrested?
Tom Homan: I'll say it about anybody. You cross that line. It's a felony to knowingly harbor and conceal an illegal alien. It's a felony to impede law enforcement from doing their job.
Jacob Soboroff: Do you think that the mayor of L.A. is doing that?
Tom Homan: If she crossed that line, we'll ask the DOJ to prosecute. Do I think she's crossed the line? I don't think she's crossed the line yet. But I'm telling you, the warning we're sending is we're not going to tolerate people attacking our officers.
At no time during that televised interview did Tom Homan say that Gavin Newsom could not “speak out”. What Tom Homan did say—accurately—was that political figures were just as subject to arrest for violating the law as ordinary citizens. That’s what we mean when we say “no one is above the law.”
President Trump naturally thought the idea of arresting Gavin Newsom was simply wonderful.
Thus Gavin Newsom posted his second ill-considered tweet.
Note the subtext implicit in both tweets: It’s shocking to Gavin Newsom that he might be arrested because “he’s the governor.” He said very nearly that in his response to President Trump’s remarks.
He did not say that he had done nothing wrong.
He did not say that Trump and Homan were enforcing immoral and unjust immigration laws.
He did not even imply either of these.
That is not the hallmark of the principled stand.
To understand what I mean by a principled stand, consider this passage from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”:
I hope you are able to ace the distinction I am trying to point out. In no sense do I advocate evading or defying the law, as would the rabid segregationist. That would lead to anarchy. One who breaks an unjust law must do so openly, lovingly, and with a willingness to accept the penalty. I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law.
Dr. King was arrested and put in jail for the “crime” of organizing a parade without a permit—the denial of which was being used by the local authorities to suppress civil rights protest marches.
Dr. King willingly chose to defy the law, and then willingly accepted arrest and incarceration as a consequence.
There is no such humility to be found in Gavin Newsom. There is no such humility to be found in any Democrat. They are appalled that the consequences for breaking a law include getting arrested. They genuinely believe—and Newsom has all but said outright—that they should suffer no consequences at all for breaking the law.
Consequences, in Newsom’s eyes, are the injustice. Accountability is truly anathema to Democrats. To the Democrats, standing in opposition to the law is somehow noble, and somehow automatically absolves them, freeing them from suffering any consequence.
This is the Democrats’ stance on illegal immigration in a nutshell. They do not like the immigration laws that are on the books, and so they choose to disobey those laws. They encourage others to disobey those laws. They reject the notion that they should pay any penalty for choosing to defy the law.
As Dr. King explained so eloquently, The law does not operate that way. There are consequences to be suffered when one breaks even the most unjust of laws. The man of conscience accepts those consequence.
Not Gavin Newsom—and not any Democrat. No Democrat accepts that there are any consequences to their actions.
Democrats believe—and Gavin Newsom demonstrates—that they are above the law. They are above accountability, and above consequences.
And so here we are.
Here in Illinois we are familiar with governors and various and sundry politicians being arrested and vacationing in prison. I hope Newscum does get arrested. Blagoyavich can give him some tips on prison manicures and hair doos. Something is truly wrong with these nutjobs.
Your eloquence is a perpetual joy, Peter. “Consequences, in Newsom’s eyes, are the injustice. Accountability is truly anathema to Democrats.” You’ve summed up the whole problem with the Democratic Party. They have become the spoiled brats of America. Well, the rest of America has pretty much lost patience with people like Newsom. They have trashed California, and we aren’t tolerating their brattiness any longer. Go sit in a corner until you’ve learned your lesson and apologized, Newsom.
