By so doing, they've backed Newsom into a corner. He has to put a stop to the violence no matter what. Newsom might tantrum about it, but he's now compelled to essentially make good on Trump's promises to end the violence.
If he doesn't, even Californians are likely to support Trump reasserting his authority and dealing with the situation directly.
