People seem almost giddy observing, from afar, the bombs and doom of this possible prequel to a nuclear war.

Most people seem to forget that Israel and Iran often had fine relations that date back to Cyrus the Great who brought an end to the Babylonian exile of the ancient Hebrews. Most people, reacting like adolescent boys to the bombs and bombast and infantile rhetoric of both sides, forget to lament that this hatred did not have to be.

People have been waiting for this war for so long, and are so apt to thing of Israelis and Iranians as ardently desirous of going up in flames for "the cause," that they forget: Historically Israel and Iran have often had very fine relations and this war is a pity --- and that's an understatement.

Of course Trump knew about this. He's as "Deep State" as anyone. War, civil war and division, and economic collapse. Everything is moving right on schedule and all at the same time. Not what I voted for or was promised when I voted for Mr. Trump. As Karen Kwiatkowski stated in an article today: "Trump 2.0 is largely Biden with a functional spinal cord," - https://karenkwiatkowski.substack.com/p/newtrump-foreign-policy-is-it-a-trainwreck

"Operation Rising Lion" by the way.

Funny thing is that the pre-revolution Iranian flag has a rising lion. Is this code for the reversal of the revolution?

An interesting hypothesis.

Netanyahu has sent a video message to the Iranian people, so there is certainly encouragement for an uprising.

The operational name also recalls Numbers 23:24:

"Behold, a people! As a lioness it rises up and as a lion it lifts itself; it does not lie down till it devours the prey, and drinks the blood of the slain.”

It also invokes a passage from the Shulchan Aruch (one of the preeminent legal codes in Rabbinic Judaism):

“One should gather his strength like a lion to rise in the morning to serve his Creator and to awaken the dawn."

I have also seen this rendered as "Rise up like a lion in the service of the Lord."

We may be certain the operational name is rife with symbolism and meaning for the Jewish people. Who's to say that there is not also an ancillary meaning directed at the Iranian people?

Recall the 1981 Israeli bombing of the Osirak reactor near Baghdad. The Israeli F-16s barely had enough range to reach that target. The F-35 has - sometimes - double the range, but that still would reach only two-thirds of the way to Natanz. The F-15s could reach Natanz, but they would likely require mid-air refueling, a capability the Israelis have but not in large numbers.

My guess is that the Israelis are operating out of at least one Saudi airbase.

I would not be a bit surprised to find Saudi Arabia cooperating with Israel in Operation Nation of Lions.

We should also remember that Israel's last strike on Iran's air defenses showed Iran to be largely toothless against Israeli air power. With Syria trying to cultivate a relationship with President Trump, they could very easily have decided not to oppose Israel flying directly through Syrian airspace to get to Tehran.

In either scenario, the outcome would illustrate that Israel very likely has more erstwhile friends and allies in the Middle East than Iran does--which would be the ultimate failure for Iran after decades of trying to export their Islamic Revolution throughout the region.

I see that the Saudis now condemn the attack. If they are not dissembling then I really wonder how Israel pulled this off.

Remember that Israel has already conducted an air assault on Iran last year. This strike confirms what appeared to be true then: Iran is pretty much defenseless, and Israeli jets can strike with impunity.

As matters stand Israel can bomb Iran as much as it wants and Iran can't do a damn thing about it. That's an embarrassingly weak position for Iran.

Yes but Natanz is so far away from Israel, that’s why they picked it for their centrifuges. Hitting Natanz is quite the feat even if the Iranian air defenses have been completely destroyed.
