Texas Democrats are simply following in the footsteps of their Wisconsin Fellow Travelers who left Madison behind in 2011 so a to make a quorum impossible when collective bargaining for public employee unions was on the docket.
Back then they simply crossed over into Oklahoma to escape their official duties.
What surprises me is that they also came to Illinois rather than 'escaping' to their fellow Democrat stronghold on the West Coast? What motivated THAT decision?
Texas still got there first--the Democrats this exact same stunt (sans the charter plane to Chicago) in 2003 in a failed attempt to derail Tom DeLay's efforts to redraw the map.
No mystery as to why they went to Chicago. Pritzker has the bankroll to put them all up in hotel rooms until Hell freezes over.
I noted a day or more ago that those who took leave of their duties may be held accountable under Federal felonious bribery statutes? Maybe also those who contributed funds to enable their absence?
I do know that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is looking to throw Beto O'Rourke in jail for fundraising for the miscreant Democrats. So there is clearly some traction for the idea.
California and New York can't possibly reorganize their Congressional districts in a manner that makes those states LESS competitive for Republicans in a Presidential election. And they have internal statutory barriers to doing so anyway.
As for Massachusetts, a state with 9 Congressional districts, in November 2024, 38% of their citizens cast votes for Trump/ Vance. Guess how many Republican Senators or Reps they have. ZERO.
Over the last 40 years Democrats have MASTERED the art of Gerrymandering. They're just all spun about this up because they see a future with millions fewer illegals being counted in the next decadenal-census, and the resulting loss of House seats.
So, is anyone in your local media in San Antonio calling it “sedition”? I’d love that, too! I’ve been repeatedly impressed by your Governor Abbott, so maybe he’s just the guy bold enough to actually charge a few politicians with sedition. Even if nothing comes of it, certain politicians deserve to have to fight such serious charges. (Hee hee.)
But politicians such as Kathy Hochul perplex me. Is she really so stupid and ignorant that she doesn’t realize the redistricting she’s calling for is against her own state Constitution? Does she think she can get away with her “asinine grandstanding”, as you beautifully put it, without someone calling her out for stupidity and ignorance of the law? Her political opposition should jump on this opportunity to show her idiocy!
And also, instead of violently trying to destroy everything, why do so few Democrat politicians realize they could actually try to CHANGE a law they don’t like? D’OH!
(By the way, I’m still smiling at you calling the Associated Press the “Asinine Press” yesterday. I love your wit Peter!)
Alas, no one in the media is willing yet to take that step. But San Antonio is actually sorta blue, so that's not surprising.
What no one is addressing is the Democrats lack of an endgame. Where do they see any of this ending? One thing Abbott is doing right is he is giving the Democrats an off ramp. They can end this madness, but they won't.
They tried this same stunt in 2003, and it didn't work then, either. So what is their Plan B this time? I don't think they have one.
That's what makes all of this completely redonkulous. The Democrats aren't able to govern even if they get their way. They oppose redistricting but they can't make a cogent argument for why they should keep the seats they have.
New York is ruled, not governed, by the Tyrants of the Democrat Socialists. The Tyrannical Governor thinks it provides cover for the inflammatory pronunciations that oxygen thief screeches.
The Empire State is starting to crumble; we rural NY's have abandoned Albany's rule.
It’s always been interesting how my city, the “Mini Apple” of Minneapolis mirrors the “Big Apple” of NYC. We have the same problem, of completely NUTSY city government, while the rural people of MN have sanity and refuse to go along with the Democratic Socialists who have taken over the Metro. Once I’m widowed, I intend to move out of Minneapolis. I’m tempted to buy a lakefront property up north - but I would still have to pay the big taxes that the city’s politicians have inflicted on the rest of the state. I’m starting to think seriously about Rapid City, South Dakota - no state income taxes, sane government.
I’d be very interested in hearing more about how the rural people in NY fight your state’s Socialists, Tom. Maybe you could give us updates, as NYC swirls down the drain of socialism? Thanks!
I'd like to mention that if there is a bona fide conspiracy to commit illegal acts in this story, then the bookers and financiers of the airplane flight out of Texas would also be liable.

(In reality, it was Texas Dems who may have given their Badger State allies the idea! 2003 saw Texas Dems acting out their passions by not doing their jobs: https://web.archive.org/web/20031123103913/https://edition.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/05/13/texas.legislature/

Please comment if you can elaborate!

Pritzker... wanting to play the 'fixer' in uniting Democrats from East to West eh? You have a point Peter....
Illinois being the one state that is potentially in worse financial shape than California, how else would Pritzker gain any national relevance?

Fiery words, Peter - I love it!

That is certainly a possibility
