I would be amused to hear a psychiatrist’s assessment of how many leaders in the EU would likely be diagnosed with Trump Derangement Syndrome. I’ll bet it’s way more than half.
Donald Trump is a genuine threat to the status quo within the maritime trading order, and a great many leaders in Europe are tied to that status quo.
The ability of France and Germany to pursue continental hegemony hinges in large measure on what the US does with its trade and foreign policy. Great Britain's efforts to maintain a balance of power on the Continent similarly hinge on US trade and foreign policy.
EU leaders oppose Donald Trump, mainly because they (correctly) view him as more than a little adversarial to their preferred geopolitical stance.
Yes. However, their preferred geopolitical stance is causing them to lose an ever-increasing number of their citizens’ approval. Interesting times WILL ensue!
Peter, I’ve heard almost nothing about Trump’s team of European expert advisors. For example, Peter Navarro has written books about China, and thus is one of Trump’s advisors on that country, but who exactly are Trump’s experts on Great Britain, Germany, the EU, and so on? Any information you uncover would sure be of timely interest!
Europe is an interesting situation for the US. With so many cultural, economic, and even political ties, there is less of a need for in-depth study regarding the idiosyncrasies of the European system.
We can readily assess events in Europe using our own political backdrop as context, because the differences are just not that great. It's only when you start dealing with Russia, with the Arab states and Iran, and with China that specialized expertise really plays a role.
