I think one big problem facing the Democrats if Joe Biden exits would be the looming cloud over any other Democratic nominee who would simultaneously have to battle being better than Trump but also better than Biden. At the point that any nominee comes forward it will be an even bigger uphill battle, and being this close to the actual election I don't see how anyone could gain momentum in such a short time.

Running on a platform that says "I'm not Trump OR Biden" isn't going to cut it this late in the game I feel.

I tend to agree. Biden can step aside as a candidate. He can't step aside as a campaign issue.

The Democrats have known at least since Robert Hur's report that Biden was declining cognitively. They closed ranks around him immediately after. They chose to keep a senile Biden on the ticket and not call for him to stand down.

Whomever the Democrats might put in Biden's place will have to explain their participation in this grand political fraud. Good luck with that.

A clear-headed and insightful analysis, Peter. And (guffaw) “feeding frenzy/open convention”! Seriously, I love your mind.

I can’t think of a single accomplishment by Harris during the past four years. She’s a nothing. She’s never even made a memorable speech. If she gets the nomination, I’d expect to see Democrats switching their votes to Kennedy in droves.

But let’s suppose that the MSM scares the populace into believing that another round of President Trump would destroy not only democracy, but literally the country. Thus, Harris wins the election by a thin margin, and presides over the country during the next four years - four years of financial troubles, wars, border problems, and other huge problems. Disaster! Long-term, she’d destroy the Democratic Party. In 2028 people would be so disgusted with Democrats that the party would be struggling for twenty years or more afterwards.

And I’m sure that the political pros realized this. But as you’ve pointed out, Peter, they have no good options here. “Heads, the Democrats lose; tails, they don’t win”.

Oh, here’s a tidbit that may be telling. I was just out running errands, stopped at a garage sale, milled around looking at the stuff along with about thirty other people. There was a table full of books, and prominently displayed was a book about Kamala. It had her name in large letters and a big picture of her. Yet not one of those thirty people picked it up, or even gave it more than a passing glance. She should be generating huge interest right now, but NOPE!

She has to get the nomination first. If the insider reports are true she's done next to nothing to position herself for Biden's presumably inevitable withdrawal.

Then she has to survive the ritual bloodletting of the general election. This is where Trump has the advantage, because the Democrats have already gone overboard to demonize him. There's nothing more they can say about him that hasn't already been said.

Kamala Harris has not been through that same crucible, which means it would be far easier for the GOP to scare folks about Harris than the Democrats about Trump.

Does anyone believe there is anything "open" about their convention?

We have to apply the term..... flexibly. Which may give Vice President Knee Pads a bit of an edge!

This is a beautifully crafted sentence!

"For many Democrats, a senile Joe Biden was preferable to a sentient Kamala Harris or a conscious Gavin Newsom."

Until he actually says the words, I won’t believe it.

Skepticism is warranted. Still, the major players all seem to be acting as if he will.

We shall see.
