Obviously, I agree with you on the importance of vitamin D.

However, the causes of vitamin D deficiency are more complex than inadequate diet or exposure to sunlight. Kidney disease, GI dysfunctions such as Crohn's Disease and Celiac Disease, cystic fibrosis, and morbid obesity are all linked with inadequate vitamin D absorption.

Governments are simply not the best means for ensuring that people have adequate vitamin D, either through diet or through supplementation. Certainly governments are not likely to be effective trying to mandate adequate vitamin D--remember, when we speak of government diktats and edicts we are by definition referring to authoritarian modes of government.

One could argue that government is well positioned to use the bully pulpit to raise awareness of vitamin D and its importance, but when it comes to the management of individual personal health, if the pandemic era has proven anything about government it is that the best thing it can do is simply get out of the way.
