The sad part is, is that yes, this is what we have become. It was only a week or so ago that NY Times columnist, John McWhorter suggested that this should happen: NY Times Columnist Wants Trump Dead – Seriously by Martin Kaufmann - https://mkaufmann.substack.com/p/ny-times-columnist-wants-trump-dead
I suspect that huge numbers of Democrats are reacting along the lines of, “Damn - the shooter didn’t kill him!” And yes, THAT’S scary. We need to heal this divide somehow, and fast.
Peter, you were about thirteen when President Reagan was shot (and survived). Do you remember your thoughts of that event?
I was 7 when President Kennedy was assassinated. I was barely aware of what a President even was, but I knew it was a huge, tragic event when our school carnival was canceled that day! That cancellation was like a bomb being dropped to a second-grader.
Why is their claim so impossible? I mean I have not preference either way- Im not in USA, so I have no skin in the game. But I find it interesting that the suggestion is met with such automated derision. Who benefits most if it was staged? A paid assassin did a pretty crappy job- that many shots and they still only "winged" him? Or "lone crazy, gun man/trans/woman, with a history of SSRI use, mental health issues and drugs? Thats not old!
Back to the question- who benefits most if there is a "near miss" assassination attempt on DJT?
Ask the questions, even if its not popular with either cool crowd.
At least one attendee was killed. For this to be staged Donald Trump would have to be down with cold blooded murder.
There is not a shred of evidence to support any part of a "staged" hypothesis, and it's a disgusting disregard for the real human tragedy unfolding here for random people online to speculate wildly about it.
Human beings were killed, and Donald Trump was very nearly killed. Surely this moment calls for a modicum of respect and sympathy for the murdered innocents.
Agreed for the most part, but considering the depth of trauma, gaslighting, and blatant disregard and common decency from people in power, institutions and media (both mainstream and alternative), over the last 4+ years, I'd speculate that this perceived unempathetic response from sections of the population is not unexpected, nor completely without cause. Large sections of humanity literally had their entire world and sense of self turned upside down, with the amount of broken social contracts exhibited by power brokers and governments, under the guise of "safety" and for the pursuit of profits.
I guess all I'm pointing out, is condemning people for displaying a trauma response, is not maintaining perspective on the relativity of the situation, especially when as tragic as one person dying is, thousands die every day and millions have been murdered in the last 4 years. Is any one of them less important? More entitled to respect or mourning?
But people are all very charged with emotions, so I'll leave it at that.
I give condolences to you and yours that are suffering through this loss and empathise with your grief and anger.

Sadly, it seems you are right.
Such is our political discourse these days.

There are already those on Twitter/X who are calling the event “staged”.

What idiots. If you listen to the video’s soundtrack, you can clearly hear several gunshots.
And tell the families of the two gunshot victims - of which at least one has died - that it was ‘staged’.
Truthfully, my thoughts were little more than “what the f*ck?”.
At that age I don’t think I was processing the political implications of such things.
I was 7 when President Kennedy was assassinated. I was barely aware of what a President even was, but I knew it was a huge, tragic event when our school carnival was canceled that day! That cancellation was like a bomb being dropped to a second-grader.
The wingnuts on Twitter/X are already screaming that it was “staged”. Seriously.

Sickening and delusional.
These are probably the same people who were screaming that the ‘anti-vaxxers’ should be locked up.
Well, fuck around and find out is a thing these days
One would hope there are at least some limits to this sort of lunacy?
One would hope.
Definitely I share your fears there.
Certainly there are those who will say so.
And there are those among the Democrats who have made similar accusations against Donald Trump in the past.
At some point, we need to move past the finger pointing and the blame and the futile accusations that accomplish exactly nothing.
We are not called to hate each other. Republicans are not called to hate Democrats and Democrats are not called to hate Republicans.
That is not how we are meant to live.
