Seems like a feature, not a bug.

Someone told me about this study earlier today. This was something I've mentioned previously, and the FDA has even brought up concerns that this would happen and mentioned that Merck had to collect data to see if this would happen. The committee was really concerned about this issue to the point that a few recommended patients taking Molnupiravir should isolate from their family in case of mutations...

This is basically confirming what was discovered in Australia towards the end of last year.

"Here, we used a case-control approach to monitor SARS-CoV-2 genomes through time in nine immunocompromised -patients with five treated with Molnupiravir. Within days of treatment, we detected a large number of low-frequency mutations in patients and that these new mutations could persist and, in some cases, were fixed in the virus population. All patients treated with the drug accrued new mutations in the spike protein of the virus, including non-synonymous mutations that altered the amino acid sequence"

It is inevitable that some of the forced mutations in some people taking Molnupravir would have enhanced fitness leading to this. How it was ever licenced is yet another example of Big Pharma converting the health care into sick care.

It's a shame the Australian TGA rubber-stamps the FDA CDC experimental products. A script for Merck's Lagevrio/molnupiravir 40 capsules costs $1,101.39.

There's a perverse irony in a medication making you more contagious rather than less. And yet this drug was approved under EUA and is being given to people around the world despite the FDA knowing this could happen.

This is not going to end well.
