It also highlights another uncomfortable aspect of this war: a return to the brinksmanship that was the hallmark of the Cold War with the Soviets, where both sides—while inwardly hoping to avoid a nuclear confrontation—more or less dared each other to step ever closer to that thin and hazy line beyond which lay the use of nuclear weapons in Europe.
