I still don't understand zero covid. Back in 2020, China was at least pretending to get back to normal in the spring and summer when the rest of the world was losing its mind. Now that the rest of the world is getting back to normal, China is losing its mind.
I don't understand their motivation for perpetuating this. They, of all countries, must know how non-lethal covid is for the vast majority. They wisely avoided mRNA (though pushing their own junk vaccines). I thought economic growth was their end all be all for the last 30 years. Why all this sustained mega-lockdown economic suicide nonsense?

During the 2010s, China relied heavily on its real estate industry to prop up its economic numbers and sustain local government functions, but real estate was becoming frothy and unstable even before Xi Jinping issued his Three Red Lines which required China's property developers to begin deleveraging.
Thus, for a whole host of reasons, China's economy was heading into very rough waters even before COVID. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that COVID has given the CCP a plausible cover story to kick the economic can down the road a little since 2020.
Additionally, one should not underestimate the impact the original SARS outbreak had on the Chinese psyche. Although the disease was hardly a new plague in terms of total numbers of people infected, its pneumonia fatalities were simply jarring to China. It is not for nothing that China has spent considerable time and effort since then studying coronaviruses and the potential for emergent pathogens from SARS-related coronaviruses (SARSr-CoVs).
Moreover, China's early data indicated a fairly high incidence of pneumonia and hospitalization among COVID patients, and a relatively high mortality rate--early estimates placed the mortality rate on par with the Spanish Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919.
Even though subsequent data never supported the "coronapocalypse" scenario, those early estimates became the prevailing foundation for all future projections, giving rise to the Pandemic Panic Narrative--which was never anything but a fiction.
Simply put, Beijing is scared of SARS-CoV-2 and indeed of any SARS related coronavirus (SARSr-CoV). Whether that fear is based on knowledge of the origins and potentialities of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that have not been shared with the wider world or simply on the exaggerated projections from the earliest assessments and which have since been enshrined as "the science" is still not fully known at this time.

These "uprisings" look different. Yes different time, different place, different tech. There's not the sense of urgency that is common to rebellious uprisings gaining traction.
Tienanmen Square is an interesting backdrop to the current round of COVID protests in China. Like the Zero COVID protests, the protesters in Tienanmen Square were motivated largely by economic frustration. By 1989 the Cultural Revolution had been over for nearly a decade and a half, and many younger Chinese wanted greater economic opportunity, which even with Deng Xiaoping's economic restructurings and liberalizations was at that time fairly slow in coming. Of course, as more than a few economic thinkers from Hayek to Mises to Friedman have noted, economic liberty is invariably linked to political liberty, and the CCP was not about to cede any political power to the protesters--and so the massacre happened.
The Zero COVID protests are similarly driven by frustration, but there seems to be the added awareness that the Beijing government has made a catastrophically wrong decision and it must change that decision. Although lacking the outward political overtones of the original Tienanmen Square protests, these Zero COVID protests, should they continue, likely represent an even more dire existential threat to the CCP, as they amount to a fundamental rejection of CCP policy.
The protests are not at all at the level of intensity needed to topple the CCP--yet. However, they are the sort of protest that, should they grow and spread, can easily reach that level in relatively short order.
If this is what it takes to make the slave population there finally rise under en masse and take down the tyrannical overlords, then good. Their obedience has been their undoing thus far.
I always pray that people will choose a path of freedom and liberty than one of oppression and slavery.
Is this the sign that Xi Jinping and the CCP are losing the "Mandate of Heaven" because of their Zero COVID lunacy? It is perhaps too soon to make that call, but there is no denying that, should anti-COVID protests spread, that is one of the very realistic potential outcomes.
