"Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Soft Matter Science and Engineering, College of Life Science and Technology, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, reported their findings from playing around with a pangolin coronavirus closely related to SARS-CoV-2."

I hate to break it to you, but the labs don't play around with "viruses". They play around with soups they create by mixing subject samples with chemicals and foreign tissues like cancerous monkey kidney tissue. No 'viruses' are ever purified or separated out from these soups. At best, at very best, they are filtered to remove bacteria and density centrifuged. The resultant "isolate" is not an isolated virus. Its still a soup containing billions of particles of every kind.

Global Virus Network. I see one but it isn’t the viruses. It’s the human criminals and sociopaths oozing around us like a burst septic tank. They are the human virus.

There is more than a little truth in that.

100% lethality. What a nightmare scenario.

There have been international agreements for years that ban the development of bioweapons and gain-of-function research, yet here are the rationalizations and weasel-talk brushing all the concerns aside. Madness!

A sort-of better scenario: the Disease X virus escapes into China, kills a few million people, and then the remaining citizens say that’s it, we now have nothing to lose by staging a serious revolution and overthrowing this entire insane government. Since it will be coinciding with a huge economic decline, all the more reason to revolt....

What is unknown at this point is how contagious this particular variant would be on its own.

As for the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention, virtually all nations which engage in substantively the same sort of weaponized research the BWC sought to ban have, in the post-Cold War era, have rationalized their way around it via the rubric of "threat reduction."

The same research into weaponizing pathogens which is banned by the BWC is permissible under that "threat reduction" rubric, and has been since the 1990s. The Nunn-Lugar initiatives of the 1990s have metastasized into the biosecurity apparatus we have today.

‘Threat reduction’ is still Orwellian weasel-talk to me. The people who rationalize this research are the ‘threat’ that needs to be reduced, in my opinion!

But this brings me to a thought I had last night, which maybe you’d like to stuff away in the back of your mind. It involves your advanced skills in explaining, clearly and succinctly, complex topics in ways that anyone can understand. China is on course to have some version of serious ‘unraveling’, and many people are aware of this now. Somewhere in America is a Chinese ex-pat screenwriter, thoroughly in touch with present-day Chinese culture, who wants to write a hit movie screenplay on this Chinese unraveling. He need someone like you to reduce the complex financial, economic, and historic factors, without the movie turning into a dry documentary.

Have you ever seen the movie, “The Big Short”? The plot was about a handful of guys who could see the mortgage situation of 2008, the coming implosion of derivatives, and so they bet against the stability of mortgages and ended up rich. In order for the plot to make sense, the screenwriter had to explain several convoluted and interdependent topics, without the movie audiences zoning out after thirty seconds. One device they used was to show Margot Robbie sitting alluringly in a bubble bath, explaining derivatives. I’m sure no male watching this scene experienced boredom. Anyway, Peter, this is one of your superpowers. No, not watching a goddess in a bubble bath - your ability to write very well, explaining complex topics. Maybe you have no interest in writing a screenplay, but you’d be an excellent consultant. Please just stuff it away in the back of your mind so that you recognize an opportunity if it should arise.

I have seen the Big Short--it's one of the better treatments of the Great Financial Crisis, and not just because it featured Margot Robbie in a bubble bath!

If anyone wants to do a similar treatment on what is unfolding in China and wants me to consult on the project, I'd be happy to do so. Actually that sounds like it would be a fun gig!
